In its oral decision of 15 January 2019, Trial Chamber I decided, by a majority of two to one, to acquit and immediately release Mr Laurent Gbagbo and Mr Charles Blé Goudé (hereinafter ‘’the accused’’) from all charges of crimes against humanity. The Prosecutor brought charges against Mr Gbagbo – the former president of Côte d’Ivoire- and Mr Blé Goudé – his right-hand man- of several crimes against humanity including murder, rape, other inhumane acts or – in the alternative – attempted murder, and persecution committed in the context of post-electoral violence in Côte d’Ivoire between 16 December 2010 and 12 April 2011.
